An exploration of the most diverse and dynamic community in the United States! There will be time to chat and eat at the end. We joined in solidarity with our community to condemn anti-Asian hate crimes and racist violence against all New Yorkers in today's #HateFreeZone march and rally organized by @kcs_ny and @minkwoncenter Our community celebrated the achievements of the Hindu Temple Society of North America with a naming ceremony for ‘Ganesh Temple Street’ on Bowne Street between Holly Avenue and 45th Avenue in Flushing, Queens. Congratulations to Dr. Uma Mysorekar and members of the Hindu Temple Society of North America on this historic milestone. We appreciate all you do for our community! Today we celebrated the life and legacy of Sarah Margaret Washington Whiting, a Flushing civic leader and community activist, with a posthumous street renaming ceremony at the intersection of Holly Avenue and Robinson Street led by her daughter, Carol Lee Whiting, a member and advisory board member of the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce. Thanks to the managers and staff of our local @starbucks stores for coming out to volunteer this past weekend at La Jornada food pantry. There's still a great deal of need in our community, including food insecurity and affordable housing, as we struggle to recover from the #covid19 pandemic. @greaterflushing is working with our local business community to recruit volunteers. Please contact us if you're interested! Minkwon Center for Community Action and The Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce launched the #FlushingHateFreeZone to provide safe spaces for our community amidst the surge in anti-Asian hate crimes, white supremacy and antisemitism during the pandemic. We were joined by the Union Street Small Business Association, Asian Americans For Equality, Queens YWCA, the Korean Nail Salon Association, Korean Community Services, student activists from CUNY, and representatives from the office of the Public Advocate, Senator Liu. For more information, follow us on Facebook and Twitter @Flushing4All “Flushing is back!” said John Choe, executive director of the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce at the Jan. 27 press conference. “The Year of the Tiger will symbolize the strength, resilience and rebirth of our community as we emerge from the ravages of COVID-19 and an epidemic of anti-Asian violence.” The Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce and St. George's Church are hosting a Pre-Parade Lunar New Year Reception from 9:30am to 10:30am on Saturday, February 5, 2020. All are welcome to join the Chamber in warming up with hot coffee and refreshments before marching in the Parade at 11:00am. Hongsheng Leng “had the freedom to go to the United States,” his brother-in-law Libin Shen said. “When I hear of the American dream, the only thing I would like to say is he died for his freedom.” During Hurricane Ida, Leng, his wife Aihua Shen and their daughter Ling drowned in their basement apartment in Flushing, Queens, where more than 70% of residents are Asian, 1 in 4 Asian residents lives below the federal poverty line, and Chinese-Americans make up three-fourths of the Asian Pacific Islander population.
