“The Good Bad Wolf” Puppet Show & Healthy Treats as well as Fresh Food from Local Farms on Wednesday, October 31, 11am
The Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce and GrowNYC invite the local community to spend Halloween at the Flushing Greenmarket, where there will be a free children’s puppet show, healthy snack giveaways, healthcare information as well as the regular weekly access to locally grown fresh produce and cooking demonstrations.
CityParks PuppetMobile, the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, will present a free puppet show, “The Good Bad Wolf,” during a program that runs from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, on October 31st. This modern-day fairy tale, starring classic characters from The Three Bears, “finds Baby Bear and her friend Goldilocks making it their mission to help change the Big Bad Wolf into good.”
While Halloween is often associated with too much unhealthy candy, Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce member Jane Nguyen, a consultant for Arbonne, a health and wellness company, will be handing out healthy snacks along with staff from GrowNYC. Nguyen says her typical client seeks a green, holistic lifestyle and wants to invest in products that promote natural healing while avoiding cruelty via animal testing. It’s this interest in natural health and wellness that brings her to the green market. “I like to help others in need so I do enjoy supporting different causes through donations and fundraising events.”
YWCA Queens Healthcare Specialist and Navigator, Tammy Yuen, will also be at the green market distributing information and offering guidance on navigating the complex health insurance landscape.
The Greenmarket, initiated by the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce, was launched at Maple Playground in the summer of 2016. The Chamber curates programming at the greenmarket, promoting environmental education, as well as activities that support wellbeing and healthy within the community. The performance will be ideal for children and their families.
The Greenmarket will open every Wednesday until the week after Thanksgiving.
Located at the popular Maple Playground, the Greenmarket provides neighborhood residents access to farm fresh food from a regional farm. The market also offers free healthy recipes, as well as family friendly activities at the market information tent. Community interactions and fresh food make this market the place to be on Wednesdays until November 28.
“We’re happy to work with GrowNYC, The City Parks Foundation, Ms. Nyugen, and the YWCA to present another amazing day of fun and healthy food and snacks at the Flushing Greenmarket at Maple Playground,” said John Choe, executive director of the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce. “This year, the Flushing Greenmarket has featured cooking demonstrations, nutrition workshops, and now this wonderful puppet show for children on Halloween.”
GrowNYC’s Greenmarket works to preserve local farmland, while ensuring that New Yorkers across all five boroughs have access to fresh, healthy food grown right here in our region. A central component of Greenmarket’s mission and operations is product integrity: everything sold at market is 100 percent farmer grown, produced, caught, or foraged. In addition to operating farmers markets, Greenmarket is working to improve the health of all New Yorkers with a suite of food access strategies aimed at getting the healthiest, freshest food into the hands that need it most.
“Not only are greenmarkets an excellent way for communities to support locally grown, fresh and healthy food, but they are also a telling sign of the economic vitality of neighborhoods. Thank you to the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce for supporting healthy choices for shoppers here in Flushing,” said City Councilman Peter Koo.
